Nellai Fish Curry
- Nellai Fish Curry is a flavorful and spicy fish curry from the Tirunelveli region of Tamil Nadu. The dish combines a smooth masala paste with tamarind pulp, coconut, and aromatic spices, creating a rich and tangy gravy. Gingelly oil enhances the flavor, while green chillies and small onions add a distinctive aroma. The fish is gently cooked in the curry until perfectly tender and is best enjoyed with steamed rice or traditional South Indian breads.

Ingredients
Instructions
- Mix tamarind pulp water, ground masala paste, salt, chopped small onions, tomatoes, and green chillies in a bowl. Add 2 cups of water and stir well.
- Heat sesame oil in a heavy-bottomed pan. Add fenugreek seeds, cumin seeds, chopped onions, and curry leaves. Fry until the fenugreek seeds crackle and the small onions are browned.
- Pour in the tamarind masala water base, cover, and bring to a boil. Let it simmer until the raw smell disappears and the green chillies change color.
- Add the cleaned fish pieces and cook on medium heat for 5 minutes, occasionally rotating the vessel to ensure the gravy coats all the fish pieces.
- Dilute the coconut paste with water and pour it into the curry. Stir gently, then lower the flame and cook for another 4-5 minutes until the oil separates and floats on top.
- Remove from heat and serve hot with rice, idli, dosa, appam, or chapathi.
Notes
- Avoid stirring the fish too much, as it may break apart.
- Rotate the vessel to coat the fish evenly with the gravy.
- Adjust salt and spices to taste before serving.
