Instructions

  • Pressure cook the potatoes and moong dal. Peel and mash the potatoes and moong dal separately.
  • Slice the onions and green chillies. Grind the grated coconut, fennel seeds (if using), and garlic with water into a smooth paste.
  • Heat oil in a pan and temper with the ingredients listed under "To Temper."
  • Add the onions and green chillies, and fry until the onions turn translucent.
  • Add 2 cups of water and salt, then boil for 3 minutes. Add the mashed dal and potatoes, mix well, and bring to a boil.
  • Add the ground coconut paste, mix well, and simmer until the gravy thickens.
  • Add lemon juice before serving or use 1 tomato instead, fried after the onions.

Notes

  1. Use only up to 2 garlic flakes, as more will overpower the flavor.
  1. The fennel seeds can be omitted, and the flavor will still be excellent with the cinnamon and garlic combo.
  1. Instead of grinding garlic with the coconut, crush and fry it with the onions.
  1. Kadapa is typically white in color but you can add turmeric for a different flavor.
